A new, large sports and well-being centre is being planned in the metro centre’s premises in Kivenlahti, Espoo. It would support the area’s service selection and offer new recreational options that are easy to reach by public transport. The City of Espoo’s Business and Competitiveness Subcommittee will consider reserving the area for project planning on 4 May.

This notable joint development project involves the City of Espoo, Länsimetro and K-Sky Sports Oy, which has applied for a planning reservation for a 7,000–10,000-square-metre sports centre. This centre is planned for the same block as Länsimetro’s park-and-ride building. The plan is to execute these projects as a joint venture.
“The project development group has a strong belief in the growing attraction of Kivenlahti and it wishes to make the sports and well-being service selection in the metro zone even more diverse. The required project schedule that is bound to the metro’s construction project is challenging, though,” says Mikko Tuominen, the Managing Director of K-Sky Sports Oy.
“The great location of the hybrid sports centre, along Länsiväylä and right next to the metro station, is the optimal location from many perspectives,” says Economic Counsellor Heimo Välinen from K-Sky Sports, who has developed and managed business operations in the area for a long time.
The multi-storey building planned along Länsiväylä would become a gate to the metropolitan area and would also provide the Kivenlahti centre areas with a partial noise barrier between it and Länsiväylä.
Kivenlahti to develop alongside the metro’s construction project
“Placing a variety of services in the metro zone close to the residential areas to be built nearby in a way that facilitates efficient land use promotes the City’s goals. It is great that the metro zone and Kivenlahti are attracting new companies and business that provide employment to Suur-Espoonlahti,” says Olli Isotalo, the Head of Technical and Environment Services.
In the future, the area around the Kivenlahti metro station and the southern part of Kiviruukki will be developed into a strong centre of business, education and services. The goal is that the surroundings of the metro centre be partly completed by the time metro traffic starts a few years from now. The street network in the area will also be significantly renewed during the coming years.
