Bus routes in southern Espoo will be redesigned when the metro starts running all the way to Kivenlahti. According to the current estimate, the metro will run to Kivenlahti in 2023.

Once the metro starts to run all the way to Kivenlahti, a direct connection from Espoo to the centre of Helsinki will become available to even more people. In addition to this, during peak hours, there will be direct buses to Kamppi from Olari, Saunalahti, Latokaski, Kurttila and Tillinmäki. Buses will run every 20 minutes during peak hours.

In the future, there will be no direct bus connection from Espoonlahti and Soukka to Kamppi, even during peak hours. Maintaining bus services would overlap with the metro and mean a reduction in service to other areas.

Improvements to Espoo’s internal connections as well

The new bus routes in southern Espoo will also improve connections within Espoo. Trunk bus lines 520 and 530 will provide enhanced connections between the metro and the coastal railway. They will run frequently from Matinkylä to the centre of Espoo and Leppävaara.

The route of trunk line 510 will be extended from Tapiola via Espoonlahti to Kivenlahti.

Connections from Espoo to Meilahti, Pasila and the northern part of the inner city of Helsinki will also become smoother.

The board of Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) approved the bus routes and connecting lines in southern Espoo on 25 May.

Passengers involved in planning

HSL has made use of customer feedback when planning the bus routes. Customers have been given the opportunity to participate in the planning of the routes at various stages.

Feedback was received in particular on the problems with connections in the Kauklahdenväylä direction, which were taken into account as the planning progressed. The updated plan will bring new and faster connections from Espoonlahti and Kivenlahti metro stations to Kauklahti railway station.

The extension of the metro will bring five new stations to Espoo: Finnoo, Kaitaa, Soukka, Espoonlahti and Kivenlahti.
